Be Fall Ready

OK, ok. Yes I’m crazy, but I want you to be ready! It’s getting colder in the evenings…know what that means? Fall is coming. Even though its probably the shortest season, its by far my favourite season of the year. Sweaters come out, little kiddies trick-or-treating, and that little anticipation that Christmas is around the corner. It’s just something about that time of year that makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

But as the temperatures start to drop at night and we get closer to September and all that jazz, it’s good to think about how to get your house ready for the changing season – functionality and design wise. Here’s a little list I’ve compiled of random things to do around the house that will brighten the mood inside as outside starts to get gloomy and how to easily get access to your fall/winter items.

  1. Warm up your Decor – As the weather gets cooler outside, its time to start preparing the inside. Warming up your decor inside will make a huge difference in how you feel as you relax on your couch. This can be achieved by simply buying new accent pillows (using reds, yellows, orange, and neutrals), bringing in throws, new bath towels, table runners, and taking out candles.
  2. Make Space – We start to layer clothes more as it gets colder and well…HELLO there are your jackets and sweaters on the couch! NO. Make room in your entry closet from now. Take out any unused items, summer shoes, beach toys, etc.
  3. Rotate your Garage – Might seem like a huge task but it really isn’t that bad. Rotate the garage so the Winter items are easily accessible (ie. snowblower, boots, shovels, etc). Buy shelves if you have to, and start storing Summer beach items and tuck away bikes and lawn mowers. This will make life SO much easier and you won’t have to start sorting things while its cold and snowy and you’re freezing your pants off in the garage.
  4. Clean out your Garden – This is more so just before Winter. When it starts to get cold and word gets out of the first snowfall, pull out all the weeds and extra leaves you find in your garden. This allows a clean path for your plants and flowers to grow when it gets warm again! No one wants ugly grass!
  5. Bring in the Patio Furniture – May not seem like such a big deal, but as frost starts to develop overnight on your patio furniture pillows and cushions, they’re actually ruining them. Buy a bin (sold at every home hardware store) that stores all of your cushions and place it in the garage. This way it stays away from everything, doesn’t age much faster due to moisture and temperature fluctuations. You’ll love your patio furniture way longer.
  6. Get your Gutters Cleaned – Cannot stress how important this point is just before fall. The leaves that fly everywhere around your house will no doubt clog your gutters and around your roof. This causes for more problems down the road. Trust me. Call a professional to clean your gutters. Don’t try to do it yourself unless you are experienced.

As the Fall gets closer, I’ll add to this list. But hey, feel free to print and post on your fridge. This gives you a checklist to go through so you’ll go through a stress-free Fall/Winter season! Have questions? Call me and I’ll be sure to help you get started!
